Irgendwie war bei diesem Urlaub von Anfang an ein bisschen der Wurm drin.

Der Tag der Anreise

Auf dem Weg zum Flughafen bekamen wir die Nachricht, dass der Flug 1,5h Verspätung hat, im ersten Moment natürlich nervig im Nachhinein ein Glücksfall für uns.
Geparkt haben wir unser Auto bei ‘Tavelcar’ für 45€ für knapp 2 Wochen.
Tipp: Ist ein bisschen schwierig zu finden, beim Indoorspielplatz Bobbolino seid ihr richtig.
Von dort seid ihr mit dem Shuttle in ein paar Minuten am Flughafen.
Die Check-in Schalter für Flüge in die USA sind nicht unbedingt die, die angeben sind, als wir endlich dran sind werden wir weiter geschickt, für USA-Reisende  gibt es einen zusätzlichen Pass- und ESTA check direkt vor dem Schalter.
Tipp: Ach ja wer nicht verheiratet ist, darf nicht zusammen überprüft werden!
Unser nächstes Problem wartet, nach dem 2. Pass- und ESTA Check am richtigen Schalter auf uns: Unsere extra bezahlte Sitzplatzreservierung für Sitze mit mehr Beinfreiheit gibt es nicht. Wir haben die Wahl zwischen getrennt sitzen und 3 Plätzen nebeneinander, natürlich mit weniger Platz. Bei einem 8h Flug entscheiden wir uns für letzteres. Im Flugzeug später wird uns aber geraten uns zu beschweren um wenigstens die zusätzlichen Gebühren wiederzubekommen…

ESTA

Unsere Odyssee an Schwierigkeiten hat aber gerade erst angefangen.
Wer mit Kleinkind reist und trotzdem Quetschbeutel dabei hat muss diese auch in durchsichtige Plastiktüten mitführen, wenn ihr mit Baby reist gilt das nicht!
Weil wir ja noch ewig, ca 2h Zeit haben beschäftigen wir uns  ausführlich mit Flugzeuge beobachten, na ja bis wir ausgerufen werden? Wir fragen nach unserem 3. Pass- und ESTA check am Gate nach was los ist?
“Ob das Kind ein ESTA hat?” Äh ja und es wurde ja auch schon 3 mal kontrolliert??? Kurz darauf starren wir fassungslos auf das Formular und uns wird ganz anders: da steht es schwarz auf weiß ‘not approved’ SCH… weder wir noch einer der Kontrolleure hat’s gesehen. Und was jetzt?
Ich muss sagen die Leute am Gate waren echt hilfsbereit, haben mit der Behörde telefoniert usw, aber wir brauchen ein neues ESTA und zwar pronto, ohne das darf unsere Kleine nicht an board. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatten wir noch genau die 1,5h Verspätung bis zum Abflug.., Während meneer fieberhaft alles ausgefüllt hat und natürlich nochmal bezahlt hat, hab ich alles umgepackt. Falls unsere Kleine und ich tatsächlich hierbleiben müssen, Züge nach Hause rausgesucht und versucht jemanden aufzutreiben, der uns evtl abholen kann, überlegt alles umzubuchen oder alleine mit der Kleinen nachzukommen, ich sags euch Stress ist kein Ausdruck! Noch nie hab ich so gehofft, dass ein Flug noch mehr verspätet sein wird. Nachdem endlich alles ausgefüllt, überprüft und abgeschickt war, haben wir sekündlich emails aktualisiert und mit den Nerven am Ende auf die Bestätigung gewartet. Neben uns wurde bereits mit dem boarden begonnen, aaahhh! Kurz vor knapp kam die Bestätigung, alle anderen Passagiere sind bereits im Flugzeug, jetzt musste die Behörde noch telefonisch ihr ok geben. Weiter warten und zittern, Daumen hoch wir dürfen einsteigen, wir sind drin! Es ertönt Boarding completed. Wir können es nicht fassen, das Adrenalin fällt von uns ab und wir sind fix und fertig, jetzt schon. Unsere Kleine hat das meiste des Dramas verpennt und ist jetzt bereit für Entertainment!

Wir haben jetzt schon Schiss vor der Kontrolle am JFK, Amis sind ja nicht gerade für Ihre laschen Kontrollen bekannt.

Somehow a lot went wrong right from the beginning of this holiday.

On our way

On the way to the airport we got the message that the flight is 1.5 hours late, of course annoying at first, a stroke of luck for us later on.
We parked our car at ‘Tavelcar’ for 45€/2 weeks.
Tip: Is a bit difficult to find, at the indoor playground Bobbolino you are right.
From there you will be at the airport in a few minutes by shuttle.
The check-in counters for flights to the US are not necessarily the ones listed on the screen. When it was finally our turn, we were sent further: for US travelers there’s an extra passport and ESTA check just outside the counter.
Tip: Oh yes, who is not married, will not be checked together!
Our next problem is waiting for us after the 2nd passport and ESTA check at the correct counter: our extra paid seat reservation for seats with more legroom does not exist. We have the choice between sitting separately or 3 seats next to each other, of course with less space. For an 8h flight we opt for the latter. Later in the plane, however, we were advised to complain about it to get at least a reimbursement…

ESTA

Our odyssey of difficulties has just begun.
If you are traveling with a toddler and still have squeeze bags with you, you must also carry them in transparent plastic bags. If you are traveling with a baby, this does not apply!
As we still have around 2h we are watching aircrafts, well, until we are called out? We ask after our 3rd passport and ESTA check at the gate to see what’s going on?
“Does the child have an ESTA?” Uh yes and it was already checked 3 times? Shortly thereafter, we stare at the form: there it is black on white ‘not approved’ wtf… our little one has no valid ESATA neither we nor one of the checks has seen it. And what now?
I have to say the people at the gate were really helpful, they talked to the authorities, and so on, but we need a new ESTA, pronto, without that our little one can not board. At this time we had exactly the 1.5h delay to departure .., While meneer feverishly filled everything and of course paid again, I’ve repacked everything. If our little one and I really have to stay here!? I checked for trains to come home and tried to find someone who can possibly pick us up, rethinking everything – rebook or alone with the little one a day later?, I tell you stress is not an expression! Never before have I hoped that a flight will be even more delayed. After everything was finally filled out, checked and sent, we have updated every second our email account, terrible moments waiting for the confirmation. Next to us, the boarding has already started, aaahhh! Shortly after the confirmation is there, all other passengers are already in the plane, now the authority still had to give their ok by phone. Continue waiting and shaking, thumbs up, we are allowed to get in, we are in! Boarding completed. We can not believe it, the adrenaline falls off and we are already exhausted. Our little overslept most of the drama and is now ready for entertainment!

We’re already scared of JFK control, the US are not exactly known for their lax controls…
