Aquarium in Riverhead

Direkt neben unserem Hotel, liegt das Aquarium von Riverhead. Nicht besonders groß, aber für die Kinder toll: Fische, Pinguine, Seelöwen und Schmetterlinge. An einigen Becken darf man einen ganz genauen Blick riskieren und es wird den Besuchern einiges über Rochen und Seesterne erklärt.
Die Seelöwenshow könnte amerikanischer nicht sein, laute Musik, es wird getanzt und alle sind wahnsinnig gut drauf! Ziemlich ungewohnt für uns, aber hier gehört das irgendwie dazu. Mein Highlight die wunderschönen, bunten und riesigen Schmetterlinge. Für 1$ bekommt ihr ein mini Schälchen Futter für die Papageien. Ihr wolltet schon immer mal Papageien füttern, während sie es sich auf eurem Kopf und Armen gemütlich machen? Hier ist die Gelegenheit. Aber da muss Mama ran, die kids sind zwar begeisterte kleine Zuschauer, aber die Krachmacher selbst auf dem Arm sitzen zu lassen ist nur was für die ganz mutigen kleinen Besucher.

Tipp: Wenn ihr nicht müsst, spart es euch hier zu essen!

Ponquogue Beach

Das Wetter kann sich auf Long Island extrem schnell ändern. Losgefahren im Sonnenschein ein paar Kilometer weiter wird es immer grauer und nebliger die Brücke zum Strand ist kaum zu sehen und auf dem Parkplatz sind wir weit und breit die einzigen “Verrückten”, die ausgerechnet heute an den Strand wollen, zum Glück finden wir noch lange Sachen im Auto und machen uns auf in Richtung Meer. Kurze Zeit später reißt es schon wieder auf, Strandvillen, die einen zum Träumen bringen und ein kilometerlanger Sandstrand tauchen aus dem Nebel auf. Selbst wenn das Wetter noch viel besser wäre, ist das Meer im Süden der Insel für Kleinkinder aber eher ungeeignet, ziemliche Wellen und es geht nicht unbedingt flach rein. Zum spazieren gehen, Drachen steigen lassen oder Sandburgen bauen allerdings perfekt. Auch wenn das Wetter nicht das Beste ist, ein Ausflug zum Strand lohnt sich auf jeden Fall.

Shoppen im Outlet

Was in den USA irgendwie immer geht und bei einem Urlaub in die Staaten absolut nicht fehlen darf, shoppen, shoppen, shoppen!
Die Outlets, ein Paradies für Schnäppchenjäger wie mich und größentechnisch nicht mit denen in Europa zu vergleichen. Dank der ganzen Schaukelautos und -Tiere vor den Geschäften, haben meine Kleine und ich es unfassbare sieben Stunden im Shopping Center ausgehalten und unglaublich viel Klamotten und Geschenke in guter Qualität für wenig Geld gekauft. Zum Glück reicht es ihr immer noch auf sämtliche Fahrzeuge rauf und rein zu klettern und zu spielen und ich muss dafür noch kein Geld locker machen. Trotz unseres Shoppingmarathons waren wir nicht mal in der Hälfte der Geschäfte. Die Mittagspause muss hier mehr oder weniger im Foodcourt stattfinden und bietet fast food in jeglichen Variationen, gar nicht sooo schlecht fü europäische Geschmacksnerven.
Tipp: Abgesehen von dem Weg zwischen den beiden Arealen ist alles überdacht, ideal für einen regnerischen Ferientag.

Aquarium in riverhead

Right next to our hotel is the Riverhead Aquarium. Not very big, but great for kids: fish, penguins, sea lions and butterflies. On some pools you can risk a very close look and they explain a lot about rays and starfish.
The sea lion show could not be more American, loud music, dancing and everything is awesome! Pretty unfamiliar to us, but it belongs to it. My highlight are the beautiful, colorful and huge butterflies. For $ 1 you get a mini bowl of food for the parrots. Did you ever dream of feeding parrots as they make themselves comfortable on your head and arms? Here is the opportunity. But Mummy has to do it, the kids are enthusiastic little spectators, but letting the noisemakers sit on their arms is just for the brave little visitors.

Tip: If you do not have to, do not eat here!

Ponquogue Beach

The weather can change extremely fast on Long Island. We left the hotel in sunshine, a few miles further, it is getting grayer and foggy, the bridge to the beach is barely visible and at the parking lot we are far and wide the only “crazy” ones who want to go to the beach today, luckily we find some warm clothes in the car and head for the sea. A short time later, the clouds move and beach villas that make you dream and a long sandy beach emerge from the fog. Even if the weather is much better, the sea in the south of the island is rather unsuitable for toddlers, quite a bit of waves and it is not necessarily flat. Go for a walk, fly a kite or building sand castles, however, perfect. Even if the weather is not the best, a trip to the beach is definitely worth it.

Shopping in the outlet

Something that always works in the US and shouldn’t to be missed on a holiday to the States, shopping, shopping, shopping!
The outlets, a paradise for bargain hunters as me and not  comparable to those in Europe. With all the rocking cars and animals in front of the shops, my little one and I stayed unbelievable seven hours in the shopping center and bought good quality clothes and gifts for little money. Fortunately, it’s still enough for her to climb and play all the vehicles and I do not have to pay for it yet. Despite our shopping marathon we were not even in half of the shops. The lunch break must be more or less in the food court and offers fast food in all variations, not so bad for European taste.
Tip: Apart from the path between the two areas everything is covered, ideal for a rainy day.
