Long Island, die Halbinsel, auf die sich im New Yorker im Sommer flüchten und wo sich die Schönen und Reichen die Hand geben. Von all dem haben wir im Mai kurz vor der Saisoneröffnung nicht viel mitbekommen, aber eine wunderschöne Zeit hatten wir trotzdem und ein paar schicke Villen haben wir auch gesehen.

Von Philadelphia nach Long Island

Unser Start in Philly war etwas turbulent, der Mietwagen hatte nämlich trotz Reservierung keinen Kindersitz. Schon toll, selbst in Kuala Lumpur hatte das reibungslos funktioniert, aber hier mitten in Amerika…zum Glück hat in den USA auch Sonntags alles offen und wir haben spontan einen Kindersitz bei Walmart gekauft. Letztendlich hat der Gekaufte genauso viel gekostet wie die Mietgebühr gewesen wäre und er war wenigstens sauber. Das Geld dafür haben wir von der Mietwagenfirma letztendlich auch wieder zurückbekommen.

Unser Hotel in Riverhead

Genächtigt haben wir im Hyatt Place Long Island/East End°.
Ein paar Fakten: Die Zimmer waren groß und sauber. Das Frühstück ok, mit minimaler Abwechslung, sehr amerikanisch halt, dafür war der Kaffee gut. Das Wasser im indoor Pool war ziemlich kühl, den Pool draußen durften wir nicht benutzen und daneben in der Sonne liegen, war auch nicht drin. Amis haben ja manchmal so viele Regeln…Für die Kinder gab es beim check-in ein Malbuch und Stifte. Die Mitarbeiter waren sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Die Lage des Hotels ist super, direkt daneben das Aquarium, dahinter ein sehr schöner Weg entlang am Peconic river und etliche Restaurants fußläufig erreichbar. Einen kleinen Spielplatz findet ihr in der Nähe des Flusses auch. Theoretisch gibt es einen Shuttle Service zum Strand, Outlet etc, allerdings nur im Sommer, der Mai zählt da noch nicht dazu. So bin ich wenigstens zu meiner ersten Autofahrt in den USA und dann noch mit einer Automatikschaltung gekommen, einfacher als man denkt.

Essen gehen in Riverhead

Rund um unser Hotel, haben wir etliche Restaurants in Riverhead ausprobiert. Zum Teil mit fünf Erwachsenen und vier Babies bzw  Kleinkindern  plus Buggy und Kinderwagen! Nicht unbedingt die Kombination wo man leicht einen Tisch bekommt oder der gern gesehenste Gast ist! Einige Restaurants haben uns positiv überraschet, sogar mit Malutensilien für die kids und leckerem Essen z. B. im Cliffs Rendevouz, Jerry and the Mermaid oder Haiko Sushi. Das Essen in der Taqueria Cielito Lindo hat uns nicht überzeugt.
Ganz preiswert ist es auch nicht, aber auch kein Vergleich zu Manhatten.

Long Island, the peninsula where New Yorkers escape during the hot summers and and where the rich and the beautiful shake hands. Of all this, we did not notice much in May just before the season started, but we had a wonderful time anyway and we also spotted  a few chic villas.

From Philadelphia to Long Island

Our start in Philly was a bit turbulent, the car did not have a child seat despite a reservation. It worked really well, even in Kuala Lumpur, but here in the middle of America … fortunately in the US everything was open on Sundays and we spontaneously had to buy a child seat at Walmart. Ultimately, the purchased one costes as much as the rental fee would have been and it was at least clean. We finally got the money back from the rental car company at the end.

Where we stayed in Riverhead

We spent the nights in the  Hyatt Place Long Island/East End°.
A few facts: The rooms were big and clean. The breakfast was ok, with minimal variety, very American, but the coffee was good. The water in the indoor pool was pretty cool, the pool outside we were not allowed to use as well not lying in the sun… Sometimes, Americans have so many rules … For the children, there was a coloring book and pencils at the check-in. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is great, right next to the aquarium, behind a very nice path along the Peconic river and several restaurants within walking distance. You will also find a small playground near the river. Theoretically, there is a shuttle service to the beach, outlet etc, but only in summer. So at least I came to my first driving experience in the US and then with an automatic transmission, easier than you think.

Eating out in Riverhead

Around our hotel, we tried several restaurants in Riverhead. Partly with five adults and four babies or infants plus buggy and stroller! Not necessarily the combination where you easily get a table or are the most welcome guest! Some restaurants surprised us positively, even with painting utensils for the kids and delicious food. Cliff Rendevouz, Jerry and the Mermaid or Haiko Sushi. The food in the Taqueria Cielito Lindo did not convince us.
It is not very cheap, but also no comparison to Manhattan.
